Handwriting to Font

Terms of use

These terms are written to be read. They cover what the site is, who owns the fonts you make, which fonts are bundled, what we promise and what we do not.

1. What the service is

Handwriting to Font is a set of free browser tools that turn handwriting you draw or scan into a font file, and that preview and use that font. By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.

The tools run in your browser. We do not hold your work on our side, and there are no accounts in this version.

2. You own your fonts

Your handwriting is yours, and so is any font file you generate from it. We claim no ownership of, licence to, or rights in your drawings, scans, projects or exported fonts. You may use them privately, commercially, in products for sale or in a font you distribute, subject only to the next point.

You do not need to credit this site. One detail to know: the exported file's identification string mentions the tool that built it, and you can edit that, along with the font name, in any font editor if you want a clean record.

You are responsible for having the right to what you put in. Draw your own letters or scan your own writing. If you trace over someone else's font or lettering, their rights can still apply to the shapes you copy, and selling the result is your responsibility, not ours.

3. Bundled fonts

The site bundles Caveat, Allura, Shadows Into Light, Kalam, Playfair Display, Pinyon Script and Inter, each licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. They are used for previews, the optional ghost letter behind the drawing box, site design and the signature and handwriting presets. They are never merged into a font you export: your file contains only your own glyphs plus the blank space and the missing-glyph box.

If you use one of those bundled fonts in your own projects outside this site, follow its licence at its source.

4. Acceptable use

Please use the tools for lawful purposes. Do not try to disrupt the site or probe it for weaknesses, do not use it to make a font that imitates another person's handwriting or signature in order to deceive, forge or defraud, and do not use automated tools to load the pages at a volume that affects other visitors.

5. Provided as is

The site and its tools are provided as they are, without warranties of any kind. We try to build carefully, and we test our own claims, but we cannot promise that every font will render identically in every application, that a scan will find every letter, or that the service will always be available.

Compatibility with other software is outside our control. Whether Word, Canva, GoodNotes, Notability or any other program accepts a font file depends on that program and can change without notice. The home page and guides describe what we know, and are not a guarantee.

6. Your data and losing it

Because projects live only in your browser's storage, they can disappear if you clear site data, switch browsers, use a private window or lose the device. Export a font whenever you want a copy that is safe. We cannot recover a lost project, and to the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losing one.

7. Limits of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from your use of the site, such as lost income, lost data or the cost of redoing work. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have by law that cannot be limited.

8. Changes to the tools

We may add, change or remove features, including features labelled as coming soon, and we may pause the service for maintenance. Because your work is stored in your own browser, changing the site does not delete it, but a change in a browser or in a tool can affect how a project opens, so exporting a font you rely on is wise.

9. Other software

The site may link to other websites or mention other apps for context. We are not affiliated with, and do not control, those apps and sites, and their own terms apply when you use them.

10. Changes and contact

We may update these terms as the tools change. The current version is always on this page, and continuing to use the site after a change means you accept it. Questions about the terms are welcome on the contact page.
